BAHM | 2.2.18 | Jamillah James
This past August, Jamillah James was announced as Curator of the ICA LA (formerly Santa Monica Museum of Art). She previously served as the Assistant Curator at the Hammer Museum for the past two years. While at the Hammer she contributed to a number of exhibitions in collaboration with Art + Practice, a non-profit organization founded in part by artist Mark Bradford in Leimert Park. Before moving to LA, James held curatorial fellowships at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Queens Museum. She describes her time at the Studio Museum as formative, working under the mentorship of Director, Thelma Golden.
James has already shown her enthusiasm for exhibiting early-career artists in their first institutional exhibitions, including Simone Leigh and Njideka Akunyili Crosby as part of the Hammer Projects as well as Abigail DeVille, Sarah Cain, Alex Da Corte, and Charles Gaines. Upcoming projects include the first U.S. survey of artist B. Wurtz, the first solo exhibition in LA for artist Nayland Blake, as well as solo projects with Rafa Esparza, Maryam Jafri, and Lucas Blalock.
